Say the words Army wife, and what often comes to mind is the image of a teary-eyed woman running to hug her returning combat soldier-husband or a caricature based on a slickly produced reality TV show. The Immortals is different. This stunning first novel full of emotion addresses the truth of the female predicament the unsung heroes who are left behind on the home front of war. We experience the love and challenges between husband and wife, we feel the closeness of mother and daughter, and we bond with the most unlikely of women.

When we first meet Calli Coleman, a classically trained musician from a well-connected Baltimore family, it is the summer of 2005 and the United States has been at war in Iraq for two years. She has been uprooted from the hometown she adores and abruptly lands in the role of Army wife in provincial Sackets Harbor, New York outside of Fort Drum. Naïve to all things military, Calli has no idea what s in store for her when Luke s infantry unit deploys to the Iraq War to an area CNN dubs The Triangle of Death . Left back in New York with their three-year-old daughter Audrey, black Labrador Satchmo, and a fat cat named Charlemagne, Calli has a steep learning curve as she tumbles into a complicated social hierarchy where she finds her well-heeled childhood does her more harm than good.

Desperately missing her friends and family and amid the impertinent Army wives, unlikely friendships evolve with Josie, Rachel, and Daphne. Seemingly as different from one another as can be, and certainly unlike her dynamic, jet-setting best friend Eula, these women will nonetheless come together for courage, support, and to embark upon the deeply emotional roller coaster ride of being an Army wife.

With only letters and email as their communication, Calli knows very little about Luke s mission in Iraq. Through their letters we get a beautiful picture of their love for each other and what it means to serve our Nation but Luke cannot share much about the confidential assignment. The news on the radio and television is never good. Calli dreads the phone ringing to tell her of more soldiers being blown up by IEDs or killed by gunfire and she fears The Trifecta - the casualty assistance officer, rear-detachment office, and chaplain will be sitting in her driveway waiting to tell her the worst news she can imagine. In Luke s absence, Calli, alone with her daughter, learns that if anything is worth fighting for, it s the unpredictable new friendships that will sustain her through loneliness and the ever-present specter of widowhood. At the end Calli will find herself on an unexpected course full of epiphanies about herself and her marriage. The Immortals is an emotional examination of marriage, friendship, war, and death. Tori Eversmann, through her distinctive voice that comes from her own time as an Army wife, has given us an unforgettable story.

I loved this book! When the book ended, I found myself wanting to know more about the characters - what happens to them, how do they adapt and change further. I was so invested in them and that is when I know the characters of a book are well drawn. The sacrifice of army spouses is enormous and I can't thank enough our men and women who support their sons, daughters, husbands, and wives as they go off to protect our country and freedom. The Immortals gives us insight into what it is like to have a loved one off at war - the constant worry, the concern, missing them, and having to carry on. I looked at this book from multiple angles. We all have to look inward when our world is rocked. For the main character, it is her husband going off to a war zone. However, for countless women, it could be the loss of a child, spouse, or parent, or a gut-wrenching divorce....whatever it is that rocks you to your core, that makes you wonder who you are and where life is going, who are left behind to raise their children on their own, whose world isn't what they expected it to be.....they look for other people (often women) who have experienced the same thing. It is our sisterhood - our bond that helps us get through these dark times. I believe so wholeheartedly in women supporting (not tearing down) other women. Mrs. Eversmann writes so eloquently about how her main character is supported by some surprisingly amazing women - women that would not normally have been friends -but through their experiences, they are each other's lifeline. On another note - I think it is so important for our generation to write down the history as it happens, since electronic communication may make it challenging for later generations to learn about what happened today. Mrs. Eversmann shows how important this written communication is for our future generations. Great book - a fast read - I couldn't put it down. If you are a military spouse- I think you would find the book uplifting and possibly even a 'how-to' find support during a challenging time. And if you are a family member that is desperately trying to support a military spouse in your family - this book would be invaluable to read so that you can empathize a better deeper on what he/she is going through. And for those who just enjoy a good story - I'd highly recommend this book!

The Immortals Tori Eversmann 9780996566728 Books Reviews

If the mark of a good storyteller is one who evokes strong feelings then Tori Eversmann is an excellent story teller. My feelings ran the gamut; cringing at parts, laughing and crying, the whole enchilada. I'm not a military wife and never lived on or near base. I was a military mother who lived far from the support system, such as it is, that exists for families.I do understand the difficulties of life when a loved one is deployed. This book is a glimpse behind the scenes of what many military families have experienced over these long, difficult war years in Iraq and Afghanistan. I hope that many people will read this story and begin to appreciate what so few have done for so many.
Knowing absolutely nothing about army life, I was curious to read Tori's book. So glad I did! I could not put it down! We as Americans always thank those brave men and women who serve our country. We also need to thank the brave spouses who stay on the home front to hold down the fort! I never realized the amount of time army wives spend agonizing over what's going on halfway around the world. The waiting/worrying/looking for the "trifecta" of cars outside their homes to bring bad news - was so painful for me to read. Tori truly places her reader right there with her, depicting that incredibly trying time in her life when her husband was deployed for over a year and she was in NY with her baby girl waiting and hoping that he would come back to them in one piece!! I was riveted!
A great read!
I thoroughly enjoyed this look into life as a military bride. As someone not too familiar with military life and the hardships that go with it, The Immortals gave me some insight to what our military families go through. Not to mention, some spice to keep the story interesting!

I found myself sympathetic to Callie's position of trying to "fit in" with the other wives, but also thinking that they had nothing in common! I loved the stories or friendships and life-long bonds that are made.

Hoping to read another book by Tori! Well done!
This story captures the real life trials of an Army wife, with a look at a spectrum of people who represent the small percentage of the Americans that have chosen to serve. From Cari the highly educated, musically talented, main character to the young teen couple, still children themselves, must live with the separation and isolation that deployment forces them to deal with. The story exposes how military families are thrust together, form bonds, support structures, and a variety of social events to perhaps distract each other from the reality of losing their Soldier to war. This story could be written by millions of wives throughout the ages, with a variety of endings....The last sentence of the last chapter took my breath away!
A very enjoyable read by a close, personal friend. Tori's writing gives some perspective to one of the toughest jobs that very few people understand -- that of the spouse (and spouse group leaders) whose significant other is deployed. The Immortals gives the reader a glimpse of the constant challenges for our spouses when we are away -- they have the difficult task of balancing their day to day life against the enormous stress they feel hoping and praying their loved one returns home safely. Similar to the lives of the ones they love, the military spouse can never be adequately thanked and their lives rarely understood. Thankfully, The Immortals helps with the latter, thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Eversmann.
